One of the oldest cities in Europe, Rome long served as the center of the western world. Rich in history, Rome is one of the major foundations for western culture and its ancient influences can be seen throughout the world today.
Visitors to the city will be surprised by the combination of modern and ancient architecture, and legendary buildings such as the Colosseum, The Vatican, and the Pantheon are a must see.
An ancient arena constructed around 70 A.D. under the rule of emperor Vaspacian, the coliseum once entertained up to 50,000 spectators. Although it also served as a place for public affairs and spectacles, the Coliseum is best known for its gladiatorial combats, brutal contests between fighters, often slaves, and occasionally between exotic animals collected from the far reaches of the Roman Empire. Legend has it that the arena was also occasionally filled with water in order to reenact historical naval battles. Still in excellent condition, visitors to this site get a sense of what life was like in ancient Rome.
Following a Roman tradition of building ornate fountains at the termination of aqueducts, the Trevi Fountain was completed during the Renaissance, in 1453, under the guidance of Pope Nicolas V. According to legend, the source of this particular aqueduct was found with the aid of a virgin, and the fountains elaborate marble façade commemorates this occasion. Legend has it that if you make a wish and throw a coin over your shoulder into the fountain, that wish will come true.
The Roman forum was the focus point of ancient Rome and was the location around which the city developed. Much of the ancient Rome's communal buildings and activities were located in the forum. Substantial architectural remains are located throughout the forum, and visitors are free to walk about the large area, much as Roman citizens did over two thousand years ago and view statues and buildings from the era.
