Stockholm is at the eastern tip of Sweden, not far from Finland and the baltic countries.
The inner town, innerstaden, covers 35 km² of land and 12 km² of water, and contains most of the interesting locations.
Located between Norrmalm and Södermalm, Gamla Stan [1], the Old Town, is the historical centre. It contains the Royal Palace and the Riksdag - the Swedish parliament.
Norrmalm[2] is the major commercial district, with plenty of shopping opportunities. Southern Norrmalm is mostly called City and is regarded as the absolute center of Stockholm.
Södermalm[3], Söder, used to be the home of the working-class, but was mostly gentrified during the last decades of the 20th century.
The Old town dates back to the 13th century, and consists of medieval alleyways, cobbled streets, and archaic architecture. North German architecture has had a strong influence in the Old Town's construction.
